This inaugural post is about news websites and health inspection reports.
Earlier this year, the Orlando Sentinel accidentally threw a grenade into a vegan restaurant’s operations when it reposted flawed state data, effectively putting The Hammered Lamb on blast for roach violations that they had never earned.
The quote from the Poynter article that piqued my interest was from State Representative Anna Eskamani from Orlando, who tweeted about the incident. She called The Hammered Lamb “one of our best restaurants in town” and said the Sentinel was publishing “click-baity articles that are no better than posting mugshots.”
It’s interesting to me because I’ve clicked on equivalent stories for restaurants in the Triangle area. It really does seem to be like a thing that the algorithm is trained to push on folks. So, in theory, folks are really interested to know which restaurants are failing their inspections.
It’s never about a restaurant doing well, though. Go figure.
